Name the job the channel must perform

Is the channel meant to reach a new audience, reduce buying friction, improve delivery or serve an existing customer more often? Pick the primary job. A channel that creates awareness may still be poor at converting a complex product without assistance.

Write a baseline for the current route to market using the same customer group and period. If the new channel serves different customers, explain that difference before attributing any change to the channel itself.

Compare the full operating path

Trace discovery, consideration, payment, delivery, support and repeat purchase. Record which steps the partner controls and which remain your responsibility. Include commissions, returns, content production and customer service rather than looking only at advertising spend.

Check customer ownership and measurement access. Can you contact buyers again, understand why they returned an item and identify repeat use? Unknown data access is a business constraint, not a detail to resolve after launch.

Choose cases with similar buying behavior

A low-priced impulse purchase and a high-stakes enterprise contract need different kinds of reassurance. Select cases by buying process, fulfillment needs and the customer’s ability to evaluate the offer, not merely by industry.

Look for channel conflict as well as acquisition. A partner may add reach while changing price expectations or drawing customers away from an existing route. Distinguish genuinely new demand from redistributed transactions.

Set a reversible pilot contract and review

For an illustrative small brand, a pilot might cover one product line and one region with a defined inventory commitment. Specify what happens to returns, customer inquiries and remaining stock when the pilot ends.

Judge the channel against its original job and the work it creates. Record a continue, adjust or stop decision, the evidence behind it and the next review date. Do not expand solely because launch-week sales look encouraging.
